America's first civic playhouse, Boston University Theatre was the first tax-exempt theater in the nation. The first Boston Opera House was built in 1901 on Huntington Ave. just two blocks from Boston Symphony Hall, and one block up from the New England Conservatory of Music. The current Opera House was fashioned from the old B.F. Keith movie and Vaudeville theater on Washington Street, and is home to the Boston Ballet, as well as contemporary Broadway productions.
